Summary of Blog

I think that this blog was very effective in a surprising way, I may add. First of all, the interaction with people from class that I dont know was really great and unique, in the way that this could not be done, or afforded to be done, in any other class. As a result of this blog, communication in class was a lot more comfortable than your usual class, and it made the overall experience of going to class a lot more easier. The blog assignments helped me a lot to understand the various concepts of managment. The best way to learn is through experience, and that's exactly what this blog provided. The fact that really make this blog effective is that it's 20% of our grade, which means that we have full control over one fifth of the class grading system! This is rarley, if ever, happens in any other class. Bloging and sharing feelings through this website was really exciting, and hopefully I'll continue this activity in the future.

Managament Poem

When it comes to managment I dont feel like a stranger
I know a lot of things like values and ethical behaviour
There is a reason why I went to school
And learned about corporations and entrepreneurs

Now days people are asking how they can make more money
I tell them "you should think about restructuring, or even a new business strategy!"
I am the kind of person who likes opinions to consider
Sometimes my peers call a "Democratic Leader"

There are things in managment that you shouldn't forget
like knowing your role and place in your general environment
But from all of managment just remember one thing
Give it all and do the best for your team

McDonald’s Experiment

Have you ever went into a fast food restaurant, and the person in front of you all of a sudden comes up with a special order, explaining it in a very specific way, and ,in general, slows down everybody and all you can think about is when can I finally get my food? Well, in this case, as much as I dislike those people, I decided to become one of them, at least for one day, and see how this form of consumer demands affects the process of operating the business and how the management deals with it. Obviously, the results of this experiment are only concerned with this particular branch of operation that I’ve chosen and does not reflect any form of generalization on other businesses and/or other forms with a management structure, but it does gives us an insight on how this particular consumer behavior can affect the operations of a business.
The business chosen for this experiment is the classic place for fast food, not only in America, but in the world: McDonald’s. Interesting enough, I went to McDonald’s for lunch, on a regular basis, and when I was notified that this is going to be the location for the experiment, I thought that it will give me a good chance to compare my regular order of lunch to this one. More interesting, is that the order itself which was picked for the experiment, correlates perfectly with my usual lunch at McDonald’s: I usually order three hamburgers with medium French fries, whereas in this particular experiment, the order is one hamburger and small French fries. When I’m buying my lunch at McDonald’s, it’s usually between the hours twelve to twelve thirty. These are, of course, rush hours, and the place is packed with disorganized lines, hungry customers, and just chaos in general. But no matter how bad the situation is, I always get my order, which is fairly simple, approximately no longer than the two minute frame. The order chosen for this particular experiment is about a quarter of my usual order, so by logic the time for me to get the order should take quarter of the time. That is not the case.
Since I usually eat there at noon, when there is a rush hour, I decided to do this experiment closer to three o’clock P.M., when there are almost no customers standing on line. I did this on purpose to see how long will it take to prepare my order, given the fact that the workers are nor overwhelmed with work, like in a rush hour, and can focus on my order a lot better. Workers at the cash register are usually very mechanic, almost robotic, and do there job without any hesitation. But when I asked for a hamburger with only four pickles on it, he raised her head and stared right at me, asking me to repeat it and if I’m sure that this is all I want in the sandwich. Then I asked her for French fries with no salt on them, but now she didn’t ask me to repeat the order. I guess she understood that I’m one of “those” and the less interaction, the faster they’ll get rid of me.
The first thing the cashier worker did after she gave me my change and receipt, is to physically go to the woman who prepares the hamburgers and explain her how I want the hamburger. There was another worker in the kitchen who took care of hamburgers, but he wasn’t involved in the conversation (I guess he is in charge of the first step of preparing the hamburger, and the other worker just finishes it off). The two workers communicated in Spanish, so I didn’t understand the exact words, but from the facial expressions of the kitchen worker, I understood that she was confused and a little bit impatient. Afterwards, the same cashier worker went to take care of the French fries. There were two different pans for cooking French fries; she emptied the first one, and poured fresh fries into the second one. Then she had to run back to the cashier and take care of more customers. In the meantime, I noticed that other worker who took care of the hamburgers and was part of the earlier conversation, was staring at me whenever he was not preoccupied with his job. I felt slightly uncomfortable; I guess people with special orders get a lot of this kind of hostile treatment. Then, when the fries were ready, one of the workers wanted to use them for his customer (when fries are ready in McDonald’s, they make a high-pitch sound), but he cashier worker was very aware of what is going on around her and stopped him on time. Then the manager, who was monitoring the whole thing, came to her and asked her what is going on, and the worker explained it to her; the manager just nodded her head and walked away.
Finally, I got my order; the exact time, indicated on the receipt, that the order was placed was two fifty eight. The time that I got my order back was Three O five. Seven minutes for a hamburger and small fries when there are fewer customers in the restaurant, as oppose to maximum of two minutes for three hamburgers and medium French fries, in the middle of rush hour- pretty big difference. All together, four workers were involved in the process- the cashier worker, which very nice, calm and proficient throughout the whole process; the two kitchen workers, who looked anti-social and doesn’t want to be bothered by anybody; and the manager, who was very unaware of what’s going on, and didn’t notice good job that was being done by the cashier worker. The thing that surprised me a little bit after the order is when I actually checked my order and I only saw two pickles in the bun. Even though I made it clear to the cashier worker that I want four pickles, and she made it very clear to the kitchen worker (at least that’s how it looked like) I still didn’t got exactly what I ordered.

What kind of leader are you?

Today in class we were being asked in a series of about thirty questions about our personal strengtheses and weaknesses. Then we had to summarize and calculate our answers to find out the results of our experiment: what type of a leader are we? There were basically four types of leaders:
1- D- stands for diplomatic
2- S- stands for strength
3- I- stands for influence
4- C- stands for conscientious

My results showed that I was an influential leader, and even though I'm usually very skeptical about these sorts of experiments, I think that this one is right on. As an influential leader, you have to know how to work with others and, more importantly, listen to others. I do this all the time, wether in my work place, or even when I play music with friends. As a band, we have to coordinate the chord progerssions, the verses, and choruses, and I'm the one who steps up, but I listen to my friends' suggestions at the same time to improve the quality of the song. I really enjoyed this experiments' results, since professor also said that this type of leader is the best example of a true leader. I certainly don't think that I'm a perfect example of a true leader, but it's nice to know that according to this test, I have some leadership potential in me.

The power of Vision

My main goal at this point is to seccessfully graduate with an Accounting degree from Baruch College. Currently, I'm struggling with my Accounting courses, but hopefully everithing will be alright. My second goal is to find a full time job after next semester, and therefoe, I'll become a part-time student. I value job experience more than grades, so all want is to pass my classes and graduate already. I'm getting tired of sitting in a class and listen to professors. I want to start working already, because that's the only way to learn the job. My third goal is to have financial security in 5 years; which means that I'll have a good job that I'll enjoy, and that I'll have my own place. It sounds very simple, but it takes alot of work to have these things, but I'm more than willing to work for it.

Everybody needs to calm down!

Wow, that was some class. Iv'e never had in all of my academic years, including high-school, such an intense class. First of all, the situation the professor put us into, was unique by itself: we had to determine our own grade and the terms of the next exam. It started good, with less arguments and more order, but the less time we had to decide, the more the chaos grew and the students were yelling all sorts of things.
The thing that bothered me the most was the general lack of respect and that some students let their ego to interfere with their decision making. That sort of egotistical behaviour is understandable when a person is by him/herself, but when you are responsible for the group's majority common interest, you have to neglect your own ambitions and try to be part of the team, and help reaching the goal which the majority of the people in the group want. These are the attributes of a true leader, and some people did not act like that, which was very disappointing.
But I'm not guilt free. I chose the avoidance method, and I just obsereved on what is going on. This is not how a leader acts, and in the future, I need to step up for the group, instead of taking the passive path of behaviour. At the end we got our desirable result, but we can improve on how to reach the results we desire.

Interested in a job?

My problem revolves around my work. I own an online store, and in order to develop it, I need people to work for me and take off the pressure of packaging and shipping the products every day. My problem is that all of my merchandse is in my house, with all do the respect, I dont want to turn my own house to an office where people are walking back and forth all over the house. I dont want to rent an office, because phisically it will be impossible to monitor on what's going on in the office, unless I'm working on it full time, but, unfurtonately, I'm a full-time student and Ijust don't have time to deal with that. It's a very frusturating feeling when you know that you can develop your business and make more money, but little problems like that prevents that.

An Eggs-cellent Way to Plan

On the latest class assignment, the objective was to throw an egg into a garbge can, while standing on a table, with the hope that the egg wont crack. The only thing that we could've used for the egg was 8 straws and a piece of tape.
As far as difining our goal, i think my team realized that the built of the device for the egg will last only 10 minutes, so we planned in a very haste and quick manner. We also identified our resources and tried to plan in a way such that it will be used in an optimal way for the egg not to crack.
We had about three different opinios for a contraction, and in each one we described a scenario of what will happen at the moment of impact, and so we chose, as a group, the optmal scenario. Then we drew a sample of the chosen contraction and each member offered to work on a different aspect of the contraction, se we had a good teamwork and communication with each other.
I would say that our only and biggest mistake is that when we actually took a course of action and built the contraction, we didn't realize that it will be reasonable to assume that it will crack, and so we did not made any adjusments and/or corrective actions to fix it. At the end, I think that's what ultimately led to the failure in our mission goal.

Just a little bit about myself

Hi, my name is Izzy, and I'm from Brooklyn, NY. I'm an accounting major student in Baruch College in Manahattan. I also have my own business of colognes and perfumes online, so I'll hook people up if you they nice enough to actually read this far. Business is what I make my living from, but what I really want to do is play music. I LOVE playing the guitar in my spare time, it's a great way to relax after a long day of work and school. I also love to play soccer, basketball, swimming, and other sports. Anyway, hopefully I'llp post some interesting stuff soon. Later...
